Battle of the Pitches FAQS
|

What is Battle of the Pitches?
The screenwriter will have one minute to pitch his screenplay to the audience and judges. The screenwriter will be
judged on criteria such as performance and persuasion ability, quality of idea, originality of idea, writing ability, and
presentation of Asian Pacific Islanders in a positive light.
Can I pitch any screenplay or does it have to be full length?
You may pitch any screenplay you want as long as you wrote it, and it is unproduced.
Can I get an actor to perform my pitch?
No. The writer must perform her own pitch.
I have an agent. Can I still participate?
Absolutely.
I had a film produced. Am I still eligible?
Yes.
What’s the point in this?
A facet of the festival is about promoting up-and-coming artists and giving the exposure that they might not have
been privy to. There’s an education factor as well since the competition simulates the high stakes, pressurized
nature of an actual pitch session with a producer or agent. At Battle of the Pitches, the screenwriter will get instant
feedback from the panel of celebrity judges as well as from the reaction of the audience. Battle of the Pitches will
be an opportunity for the screenwriter to hone her skills.
What do I get out of it?
There will be a cash prize. We’re also contacting studios and agencies to see if they will offer an opportunity to
listen to the pitch for possible representation or production. This is still in the working phase and is not a guarantee
that we procure this. The winners will also have their own page on www.mapid.us to promote themselves.
Additionally, the festival will have space for the winners to promote themselves at the venue.
Can I pitch more than one screenplay?
It depends on the circumstances of the night however each pitch will be $5 to make it fair for the contestants and
audience.
Are you producers?
Absolutely not. MAPID only produces the festival itself and does not represent itself as a film producer. The writer
holds all rights to the material. Winners may reference their award for the Battle of the Pitches if desired.
Can you help me get an agent?
No. Industry professionals will be invited to the festival, but we only offer the ability for artists to promote
themselves.
Can I sign up in advance?
Yes. Send an email to ken@mapid.us to state your intent on competing. $5 entry fee must be received by 10/21
8PM PST either via paypal or check to secure that spot. If you are unable to submit payment, your place in line will
be given away. You may register in person prior to the event at 8PM should there be openings available. Only a
set number of spaces are alloted. Prepaid registrants must check in prior to 8PM on 10/22. Due to the high interest
involved with this event, the reservation will be given away at 8:05 should it not be claimed. Prepaid entry fees will
not be returned should the registrant not check in prior to the event. Payments can be submitted to ken@mapid.us
or Ken Choy 10985 Bluffside Dr #5306; Studio City, CA 91604.
What if someone steals my idea?
The writer is responsible for registering her screenplay with WGA and/or US copyright office. An idea is not
copyrightable. Someone can have the same idea but execute that idea entirely differently.\
Who are the judges?
To insure the integrity of the competition, the identities of the judges will remain hidden until the festival dates
approach. As they are an impressive panel of judges, each with admirable accomplishment as well as ties to the
community, if we released the names, they would be inundated with phone calls from those seeking an upper hand
in the competition. But they are indeed API celebrities and have paved a path for other APIs to follow.
Who knows the identity of the judges?
Only producer do, and we’re not telling.
