In 1992, Ken Choy was awarded a Jerome Foundation fellowship
and moved to, of all places, Minnesota.  Unbeknownst to him,
there was a burgeoning Asian Pacific Islander arts community
assisted in large part by the Asian American Renaissance.  The
day after his arrival, Choy went to an AAR meeting, committed
himself to teaching classes, and became a major force for the
organization.  The comical bickering between Choy and novelist,
poet, and performance artist David Mura prompted the Asian
American Renaissance cabaret.  Choy’s first idea was “Gooks:
The Musical,” but didn’t think everyone would get his sense of
humor.  Choy settled on AARGH!!, the Asian American
Renaissance….uh…Ghoulash…Ghabaret…Gharavaganza.
All liked the expressive nature of the title despite its lacking to be
a perfect acronym.
Choy moved back from hel—I mean, Minnesota—and decided to
reboot AARGH!! for Southern California audiences, bringing
together musicians, comics, dancers, performance artists, theater
artists, and others in one setting.
