Ten Minute Asian Pacific Islander
Play Contest
FAQS
WHY ARE YOU CHARGING AN $8 FEE?

The fees offset the production and presentation of the ten minute play contest as well as provide a modest
honorarium for the distinguished judges.  The fees also help to pay for the presentation of the staged readings of
the winners including a modest honorarium for the actors and director.

CAN ONLY SOMEONE OF ASIAN PACIFIC ISLANDER DESCENT ENTER?
The contest is open to any playwright who is a US resident.  The focus is on API characters and themes as well as
work created by API artists.

IF I WIN, DO YOU OWN COPYRIGHT TO MY PLAY?
No. You retain full rights.

IF I WIN, CAN I CHOOSE NOT TO HAVE MY PLAY READ?
If you'd rather have just the honor of winning and not the honor of having your work directed and read by
professional artists in front of a live audience, that is your choice. Please notify MAPID upon your winner
notification.

HOW MUCH DO I WIN?
The minimum first place prize will be $25 which will increase dependent on the number of entries and sponsors we
attain. You also will have your contact information and library of work synopses (if you so choose) prominently
displayed for theater and industry individuals to peruse during the festival.

WHO ARE THE JUDGES? ARE THEY ANY GOOD?
The judges are an impressive group of nationally recognized individuals. So much so that I wish I could pass the
festival off on someone else so I could enter just for the chance to be read by them. I feel totally inadequate
thinking of them.

TELL ME THEIR NAMES.
The judges' names are confidential until adjudication is concluded.

DOES THE SUBMISSION HAVE TO BE IN PROPER STAGE FORMAT
Yes.
Hint: I would keep the beginning scene set up to a minimum since it is only ten minutes.

The reason it should bear close resemblance to proper stage format is so the theater professionals that read your
play can follow your train of thought, plot, character development to its eventual resolution.  Also, each page is
said to be a minute in proper stage format.  However, if your margins are off by a little bit, don't worry about it.  I
always fudge them.

OOPS, I FORGOT TO DELETE MY NAME FROM THE BYLINE!! IS THAT AN AUTOMATIC PENALTY?
All materials will be scanned for identifying marks before transferring the submissions to the judges' hands. We do
not penalize for mistakes.

OOPS, I USED SCREEN FORMAT INSTEAD OF PLAY FORMAT!! WILL I BE PENALIZED?
We do not penalize for mistakes.

WHAT IF MY PLAY WON AN AWARD BEFORE? IS IT STILL ELIGIBLE?
Yes. The panelists are independent, respected, and professional theater artists who pride themselves on
professionalism and impartiality. In the event that there may be a conflict of interest, even in the midst of blind
judging, the panelists will declare that. All plays will be judged evenly and in accordance with the adjudication
guidelines. Past history of the play will not invade in any part in the adjudication process.

WHO KNOWS THE IDENTITY OF THE JUDGES?
Only one person knows the identities of all the panelists, and I am not telling anyone.
