Susan Y. Lee
Production Assistant
It was on one of many episodes of “House, M.D.” that Dr. Gregory House said, “You can think I’m wrong, but that’s
no reason to quit thinking.” His raw genius startles some and inspires others, and I most certainly belong to the
latter. My name is Susan Y. Lee, a second-year undergrad at USC. I am currently double-majoring in Biological
Sciences and Neuroscience and minoring in Spanish. From the very first season, I was fascinated by this man, not
for his warped sense of humor or addiction to prescription pain pills but for his ability to diagnose and treat the
rarest of diseases. I have parlayed my captivation into my goal of becoming a professor of medicine, which
encompasses many of the critical thinking skills Dr. House utilizes as the head of the Department of Diagnostic
Medicine at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. I believe that being a professor of medicine is the perfect
combination of my personal, academic, and professional goals. Personally, I want to know that I am making an
impact on the local and potentially national community, which I would fulfill by teaching the next generation of
doctors but that I can work towards now through reaching out to the Asian Pacific American (APA) community.

Academically, I would be consistently challenged by my independent research (through which I hope to find the cure
for Alzheimer’s disease). Professionally, I would be able to meld the roles of physician and instructor into one by
working at the university’s hospital and teaching courses on the medical school campus. As an undergraduate, I can
still accomplish analogous feats by learning more of who I am as a Korean American individual.

Specifically, my internship at Asian Pacific Americans for Progress (APAP) as part of the Together in Empowerment
internship program last year has taught me invaluable lessons and skill sets that will assist me in the many
challenges I will face in medical school and beyond. With APAP, I served as the sole Marketing Intern for the entire
organization, focusing my efforts on the release of the documentary Vincent Who?, which chronicles the continued
significance of the Vincent Chin murder in 1982. His murder was the first hate crime in the United States that
resulted in the death of an APA individual. From this internship, I have become proficient in WordPress and have
perfected my knowledge of Microsoft Excel. I have also spoken to hundreds of leaders of student organizations from
colleges and universities from around the country, enabling me to develop my communicative efficacy within the
interpersonal relationships I can now more easily build with fellow leaders. Although I have delved into the world of
public relations and marketing, a world I never thought could coexist with my medical interests, I know I still have so
much more to experience and am looking forward to what lies ahead.

Producers Note: Susan has been absolutely fabulous. Besides being a pre-med student at USC and her extracurricular/community
service activities, Susan generously and steadfastly worked on the festival in many capacities. I would highly recommend her for any
project of which she would be a tremendous asset to.
